Looking Back, original oil painting by Tang Hai Guo 798. Looking Back, original oil painting by Tang Hai Guo

Tang's animal paintings are allegorical, representing all of the simple Chinese country folk who have migrated to cities to try to make a better living for themselves and their families, back home in the home villages.  Usually, he includes a city skyline, off in the distance, as in this painting.  That, too, is part of the symbolism, showing how far many of those new city dwellers really are from the city, even though they are living in it: the disconnections.

He's an older dog, now, and with age comes growing loyalty and commitment.  But, now and then, colorful bubbles will float by, acting as portals to the past, and they take him back to his carefree youth.

We enjoy Tang's wit, his take on Chinese life, and his symbolism.

Smiling, painting by Tang Hai guo 804. Smiling, original figurative oil painting portrait by Tang Hai Guo (2012)

Scavengers, in the streets, men in their 50's sifting through trash cans to find the good stuff.  Their skin is yellow-brown from spending all of their time outdoors, roaming the streets with their bags full of clanking cans.

His smile, too, is as bright as the sun, showing his innocence  and expressing the hopefulness and contentment that he feels in his simple life, and he does not lose face for the job that he pursues.

Onlookers, drawing on paper by Tang Haiguo 802. Onlookers, original mixed media drawing on paper by Tang Hai Guo

Take responsibility? That's not the Chinese way.  Instead everyone will stand around pointing fingers, and no one will offer sympathy, charity, or a helping hand.  They're just all onlookers, acting like they are outside of it.

I particularly liked the color scheme.

As we've noted, repeatedly, caught up in the Cultural Revolution, in the 1960's, the Chinese missed the sexual revolution, and it is only dawning, in China, now.  As a result, Chinese artists produce a lot of nudes.

However, as we have also said, time and again, we do see nudes, now and then, that we find interesting enough to include in the gallery collection.

This is a nice, soft, gentle nude of a woman just putting on her rode after her bath.
