Metamorphosis 16, painting by Tang Hai Guo   Metamorphosis series number 16, original figurative oil painting portrait by Tang Hai Guo

In Tang's metamorphosis series, he is pointing to the changes that people undergo because of materialism and greed, which are big problems in modern Chinese society.  Just like a hanger will change its shape when too much weight is hung on it, people will change with the stress that the current society puts on them to earn enough money to live like normal people do, in the rest of the world.

Having gone through the hardships of the great famine of half a century ago and the ravages of the cultural revolution of Mao, the society has been left with collective fear of not having enough and the envy of those who have accumulated so much since those times.  Those things have caused greed to run rampant, but greed changes a person on both the inside and the outside.

Brother and Sister, painting by Tang Haiguo 746. Brother and Sister, original oil painting portrait by Tang Haiguo

It is estimated that 60 million rural Chinese children are left behind in their hometowns, while the parents seek work in the cities.  They are left with grandparents or just with other siblings.  They lack sufficient care, nurturing, and education.  In such situations, they are vulnerable to accidental death, abuse, abduction, and psychological problems.

With only each other to rely on, how might this brother and sister end up?

One Side, painting by Tang Hai Guo 747. One Side, original figurative oil painting portrait by Tang Hai Guo

This is the artist's college room mate.  While most people thought that he was snobbish, petty and dishonest, Tang got to know the true him, another side, so to speak.

Often, people make judgments about other before they really get to know them.  In fact, we all have more than one side

Status series no. 9, painting by Tang Hai Guo 748. Status series no. 9, original painting by Tang Hai Guo

Shanghai and Shenzhen are cities known for their illicit activities, like gambling, drugs and prostitution.  Girls go to the big cities with dreams of success and end up in the sex trade.  When night falls, they go out trawling for Johns.

The calligraphy says: here, she comes walking; she pauses in the midway.

City dweller series no. 1, painting by Tang Hai Guo 756. City Dweller Series number 1, original figurative oil painting portrait by Tang Hai Guo

The future of humankind.  As people become less and less active, sitting at their jobs, sitting at home watching TV, driving their cars down the block to get a quart of milk, their bodies may someday shrink, being left with massive heads in relation to their bodies.

It actually reminds me of the costumes with big heads that are popular at Carnival Time, in European and South American countries.  We particularly like this figurative portrait by Tang.  It's a fun painting, and the high heels and basketball add nice touches.  The light blues are cheery.

It was also recently favorited by Artprice on their facebook page.
