Spring, painting by Liang Yi Er 870. Springtime, original oil painting by Liang Yi Er (梁艺儿)

This is a painting that could have been done by a 19th Century impressionist painter, but, instead, it was done by a 21st century Chinese artist.  The decor, after all, looks very Western with the striped-seated wooden rocker, an old pendulum clock, a nice plush oriental-looking rug on the floor, and the other amenities.  Even the girl's clothing have a 19th century European look to them.  Indeed, it also has the feel of the paintings of everyday life that the impressionists, sometimes, made.  In fact the only thing that might give away the truth is the slightly oriental look to the girl, herself.

Little River, oil painting by Li Jin Ming   Little River Fork (Dongguan), original oil painting by Li Jin Ming (1980) 小河叉

In winter, in 1980, Li went to paint this in the Zhongtang area of Dongguan.  Li was so enthralled with painting the scene, in freezing temperatures (winters, in Guangdong, were much colder, back then), that when he finished, he could not use his fingers to remove the tacks that held the canvas to his easel, and people from the crowd that had gathered to watch him paint, helped him.

It has the beautiful muted colors of winter, in the south of China, and it is in the characteristic impressionistic style that Li had been developing for almost two decades, by then.  The little boat on the water is adorable, adds movement to the cold winter scene,  and helps to lead the eye around the painting.

We offer several works by Jin Ming Lee (Jin Ming Li), in the Leona Craig Art Gallery on-line.  To see our current offerings, just click on: Jin Ming Lee Page.

Working Day & Night to Move: painting by Yi Xing Ma 671. Working Day and Night to Move: original oil painting by Yi Xing Ma, 1994-96

This is the first, in a suite of four paintings, inspired by Ma's move from Hangzhou to Shanghai, in the mid-1990's, all of which we have available, in the Leona Craig Art Gallery.  They are dark, surrealistic, and deconstructed, conveying Ma's feelings at the time.

There was so much preparation for this move, not only in packing boxes but also, emotionally, thinking ahead to a new life in a new city, and thinking about what will be left behind.  There is always much preparation and stress in a move, whether it is a move from one abode to another or a life move.

We offer the entire suite of four paintings for $240,000.
