Join in, painting by Jian Wei Shen 787. Join in, original oil painting by Shen Jian Wei (2009)

Whenever one throws a little food into a goldfish pond, one will see all of the fish whipped into a frenzy, as they all try to seek and capture the little goodie.

Shen has done an excellent job putting such a frenzy into a painting with fish partly in, partly ouf the water and swimming lover each other in a grim dance.

Horseman by Zhao Qian Xu   The Horseman: original oil painting on canvas bu Zhao Qian Xu (2008)

The horse has always played a large role, in Chinese culture, and it has been a theme, in Chinese art for millennia.  Although that culture has been lost by most of China, in modern times after the Cultural Revolution of Mao Zedong, it remains in many of the sub-cultures of the so-called Chinese minority peoples, like the Zang of Tibet.

This painting of a horseman is part of a series of the Zang minority that Xu did in 2008.  All of the paintings are done in dark blues and purples, giving them an ethereal, night time quality.  In this series, the figures have the quality of apparitions, giving them a surrealistic feel.

Dock, painting by Ling Hong Ji 663. The Dock: original oil painting on canvas by Hong Ji Ling (Ling Hong Ji) 1997

The realism of this boat dock scene is striking.  We also like the contrasting elements of the composition.  White boats, both fancy and practical, stand out in the gray day.  A long dock, seemingly rustic and cobbled together lead your eye to the pristine yacht.

Ling Hong Ji was born in Guangzhou in the mid-1940's and he has already passed away.  He graduated from the Guangzhou fine arts institute in 1970, but his work had been collected internationally before he even graduated from art school. His works display great talent and care in finishing the fine details.

Huaxi in Guiyang: painting by Jian Bai Xu 158. Huaxi in Guiyang, original oil painting on canvas by Jian Bai Xu (1986)

We liked this painting, not only for it's child-like qualities and pastel colors, but also because it is so typical of China.  Often, in China, groupings of houses will appear in the most unlikely of places, and they will be built close together, like those shown, here, so that there is virtually no space left, but for the narrow, stepped walkway between them.  Huaxi is in the south of Guiyang, which is known as the pearl of the altiplano, in Guizhou Province.
