Flowers in Vase, painting by Tan Xue Sheng 774. Flowers in Vase, original oil painting by Tan Xue Sheng (1993)

A Still life of flowers by Tan is a rarity, in itself.  This was painted shortly after he and his wife moved from China to America, so it is especially meaningful.

Moreover, it shows the more impressionistic palette that Tan began to use later in his career, perhaps, feeling more free, once he had left China.

"Shock Fish": original painting by Bo Liang 120. Shock Fish: original oil painting on canvas by Bo (Baimu) Liang (2007)

We know that Bo Liang is fond of fish since he has made a number of paintings and sculptures of fish, some of which are offered in our on-line gallery. However, this fish, called shock fish, is not your ordinary fish.  Moreover, this fish painting  shows, not only, Liang's love of fish but, also, his abilities in cubic-deconstructive painting art.  The fish's mouth is a thumb; a crabs claw makes up his lower fin.  There are also several faces of people embedded within the fish.  It is a playful and thoughtful painting that shows that Liang's ability stretch beyond sculpture and even beyond more tame realism, in painting.

picture of "Flowers in Pitcher": original oil on canvas by Zhao Bao Cheng 101. Flowers in Glass Pitcher, original oil painting on canvas by Zhao Bao Cheng

This is a bright, cheery still life of flowers in a pitcher of water.  Although it may be a common theme, it is an uncommon painting.  It has an impressionist feel to it with its use of pastel colors and an impasto painting technique that makes the flowers, literally, jump out of the painting.  It shows skill and understanding of the more subtle properties of light, as it captures the way that diffraction of light, in water, changes the appearance of the stems that are partly in-partly out of the water.  Look more closely, and you can see that even the handle of the pitcher has picked up another branch by the diffraction of light through the curved glass.  Petals of flowers are seen on the table as always happens when fresh flowers are cut an put in water.  All in all, it is a very pretty piece of art, and Zhao Bao Cheng is famous for his floral still-lifes with larger ones having gone up for auction, recently, in the $10,000 range.  Since this is a smaller painting, the price, shown, includes shipping of the painting, framed and matted (39 x 47.5 cm), as shown.

Medieval Man: painting by Feng Wu Sui 149. Medieval Man: original oil painting on canvas by Feng Wu Sui (2007)

They say that portraiture is the true test of an artist's ability, and with this simple portrait of a Medieval man, we feel that Feng Wu Sui has passed the test.  In fact, sometimes, portraits can seem contrived or slightly boring, but this one makes me feel that this is a man of character: his face is strong yet gentle.  He seems thoughtful and involved in his surroundings, even though his surroundings are not pictured.  His expression draws you in.  What is he looking at with that look on his face?  Is there a threat, a beautiful woman, has someone just asked him a question, or is he just lost in thought?

The brushwork in this portrait is quite beautiful, mixing colors with brush technique to make the lines, angles, shapes, and shadows of the face.  The bright colors of the man's Medieval headdress make this wonderful little portrait even more striking.

We have several works by Feng Wu Sui, in the Leona Craig Catalogue Art Gallery.  To see the others, just click on: Feng Wu Sui Page.
