"Wind and Frost" painting by Feng Wu Sui 166. Wind and Frost: original oil painting on canvas by Feng Wu Sui (Sui Feng Wu), 2008

This portrait shows the true artistic talent of Feng Wu Sui.  In other of his portraits that we offer, in our gallery, his technique
uses bolder brushstrokes.  Here, he uses a more realistic style for this true mandate of art: to capture a person's essence, in their portrait; the detail is so fine that you can see individual hairs of his eyebrows.  Wind and frost is a Chinese expression that refers to the hardships of a journey or of one's life.  Here, is an old man.  He has been through good times, bad times, for a long time: he is a well-seasoned man.  His teeth are crooked, his face is lined, and his smile is about his past, good and bad: slightly relieved, slight nervous, slightly fond.  He has been through it all, and he has survived, and he can smile looking back on all that has happened by the time he has gotten to this point in his life.  It is like a pictorial version of Frank Sinatra's song: My Way.  And just as one's memories appear through the fog of time, this portrait is done with a brown-gold haze.  It is contemporary commentary, complemented by the dark, shadowy realistic style of the old Dutch School.  This portrait shows the true potential of Feng Wu Sui as an artist.

Leipzig Church by Jin Ming Li 153. Leipzig church, original watercolor painting by Li Jin Ming (1985)

Li wanted to express his feelings of this church, in Germany.  Although it is colorful, in real life, he wanted to show his respect for it by making it a dark color.  He says that, to him, the church and its architecture are a refection of the German people who are serious, precise, and polite, yet friendly.  Thus, while wanting to show his respect for the church and what it represents, he added color, in the foreground, to add in the friendliness and light-heartedness of the people.  The painting is one of Ayu’s favorites.

Brother and Sister, painting by Tang Haiguo 746. Brother and Sister, original oil painting portrait by Tang Haiguo

It is estimated that 60 million rural Chinese children are left behind in their hometowns, while the parents seek work in the cities.  They are left with grandparents or just with other siblings.  They lack sufficient care, nurturing, and education.  In such situations, they are vulnerable to accidental death, abuse, abduction, and psychological problems.

With only each other to rely on, how might this brother and sister end up?
